Using violin, harding fiddle, guitar and voice, The Newlands Co-op (Vidar Skrede and Sara Pajunen) play acoustic music from Norway and Finland brought to these new lands by one immigrant or another.
Vidar Skrede has a background in the traditional music from Rogaland (southwestern Norway) and holds a masters degree in Nordic folk music from the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm. Sara Pajunen has been described as an 'amazingly versatile musician who now counts among the most ambitious and notable practitioners of Finnish folk music outside Finland.' She grew up in Finnish-American northern Minnesota and received classical music degrees in both the United States and Finland.
Now Vidar and Sara live just a seven-hour drive apart and join forces in the Newlands Co-op to bring traditional tunes to new audiences and players.
