Play! out of the Barn: Philemon & Baucis – Planet in Peril: A Picnic Operetta

Philemon & Baucis – Planet in Peril: A Picnic Operetta by Mixed Precipitation
3:00 - 4:30 pm

Photos by Jaffa Aharonov

Fun for all ages, enjoy this mix of theater, food, and music on the farm!

A new adaptation of Haydn’s rarely performed 1773 marionette opera, featuring the music of Queen!

Returning from space exploration in a far off galaxy, space cadets Jupiter and Mercury return to earth to find humanity decimated by plague. Surviving citizens are cold, suspicious, and hooked on banality. Our gods-in-disguise prowl about town looking for someplace to unveil their gender-bending extravaganza. No one will give these gods a chance but the down-trodden tavern of Philemon and Baucis.

This production explores fear, displacement, and hospitality to strangers from another world. We celebrate the natural human yearning to heal the planet — while gazing into the great beyond. This space-age, romantic adventure features the beloved melodies of Haydn’s The Creation and the defiant rock n’ roll of Queen! That means German opera and oratorio with the music of Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon.

This one-of-a-kind show is written and directed by Elizabeth Windnagel and Scotty Reynolds with music director Gary Ruschman.

Suggested ticket price $10. Call 507.352.4255 to reserve tickets.

Mixed Precipitation is a performance company exploring text, space and form with festive theatrical events that inspire social engagement. The Picnic Operetta is a lively theater experience touring to community gardens and other green spaces. A five-course tasting menu of locally grown, performance-inspired delicacies is served during each show bringing together classical music, horticulture, food, and storytelling into a celebration of ecosystems.

ONION FEST: Play! in the Barn: VANG by Mary Swander

Onion Fest.png

ONION FEST: Performance: VANG: A Drama About Recent Immigrant Farmers by Mary Swander
8:30pm – 10:00pm

Poet Laureate of Iowa Mary Swander, Pulitzer Prize winning photographer Dennis Chamberlin, and Kennedy Center award-winner Matt Foss collaborated to create a drama called Vang (meaning “garden” or “farm” in Hmong). Swander and Chamberlin documented recent Iowa immigrant farmers. Swander wound their words together to form a verbatim play that captures the immigrants’ journeys to the U.S. Hmong, Mexican, Sudanese, and Dutch immigrants all speak of their struggles, survival skills, and their intense desire to return to the land. Chamberlin took stunning photos of the immigrants in their greenhouses, farms, and dairy barns.

For any sensitive soul, it is not possible to be a witness to this play and not to be changed by it, not be moved by the gut-wrenching experiences of these recent refugees and immigrants. We applaud their ability to survive the horrific and find solace in their farms and gardens. — Dr. Judith A. Conlin, Executive Director of Iowa International Center

A Hmong family who fled Communist bullets and wild tigers through the jungle of Laos and across the Mekong River to the refugee camp in Thailand. A Sudanese man who was thrown into prison in Ethiopia for helping the Lost Boys and was left gasping for air through a crack under the door. A Mexican woman who taught herself English by looking up the meaning of the profane words that were hurled at her at her first job in a meat packing plant. A Dutch boy, dressed as a cowboy, who put the flag of the Netherlands through the paper shredder and declared, “I am an American.” These are some of the characters brought to life in Vang, a drama about recent immigrant farmers.

The immigrant farmers in this production came from four continents, speaking over six different languages, with multiple experiences of the world. In their own ways, they adjusted to life in America. Some of these immigrants came to the U.S. as refugees from war-torn parts of the world. Others came fleeing poverty in their homelands. Still others came with money, invited to join agri-business ventures. Many of these immigrants landed in the U.S. and took the only jobs they could find—in meatpacking plants and auto repair shops. But all of these immigrants had grown up on farms and wanted to once again assume the livelihood that they had known in the past, the work that had formed the foundation of their cultural roots.

The public often thinks of farmers as white males of European ancestry living in isolated rural areas. And the public often thinks of immigrants as those who have slipped into the United States to take advantage of assistance programs. Vang blows both of those stereotypes and opens discussion about how farming is done in the United States and how immigrants have become part of the larger agricultural picture.

The entire play runs an hour and has two actors, male and female, who take on the parts of all 8 immigrants. The play calls for a spare stage with simple movement and props. Dennis Chamberlin’s photos of the immigrants are projected on the walls of the theatre and bring both artistic grace and reality to the performance.

Music on the Farm: Brass Messengers

Music on the Farm: Brass Messengers (Minneapolis / St. Paul)
A sprawling fun factory of ten musicians
8:00pm - 9:30pm

Suggested ticket price $10.

Brass Messengers photos by Jim Clifford

"The Brass Messengers are a Minneapolis street band playing mostly original music inspired by global sources. The BMs formed from the annual rubble of of the Heart of the Beast Mayday Parade and Ceremony in Minneapolis. The musical origins were found in the music of Africa, the Carribean and Balkans, but now the BMs play whatever works, throwing in a country song to the crying drinkers, a high speed polka or two for the midwest dancers, running in circles with the little ones, activating gatherings of our activist kin or a bit of Black Sabbath for the metal crowd.   But mostly, it is an original music that rises from the heart of the band that can only be described as a homegrown Minneapolis street music sound.

The Messengers play stages large and small, events from parties to bars, large theaters to street parades and funerals.  The Mess have been a part of the HONK community for nine years running, attending more than ten HONK festivals in Sommerville, Seattle and Austin, TX." — The Brass Messengers website

Tom Schramm & the LP's will play music during pizza service starting at 6:00 pm.

Experience Lanesboro’s own “easy listening” band while you enjoy your pizza at the farm. "This fun group, from the hills of Southeastern Minnesota Bluffcountry, plays a mix 70’s easy listening, vintage country, a few originals and songs to sing along with. The lead singer, transplanted from Arizona, has been likened to a cross between Neil Young and John Denver, and with a banjo, upright bass, and strong harmonies, this group is a mishmash of folk, rock, country and bluegrass." — Tom Schramm & the LP's Facebook page

Play! out of the Barn: Donald Giovanni in Cornlandia

Play! out of the Barn: Donald Giovanni in Cornlandia
A Picnic Operetta By Mixed Precipitation

Republican candidates converge on a small agrarian town in Middle America. Real Estate tycoon Donald Giovanni and his campaign staff have left a trail of broken hearts and broken promises in their attempt to woo voters. Now a strange supernatural force has been ignited to bring him down. It’s a mix of Mozart, ’80s pop, and hair bands! Tasty, garden fresh bites will be served throughout the show to celebrate harvest and campaign fever.

This one-of-a-kind show is directed by Kym Longhi, with a new script by music director Jerrod Wendland. The classic Italian comedic opera meets ’80s hair bands and modern day political drama. Along with music by Mozart and Italian libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte, the cast sinks their teeth into the songs of Bon Jovi, AC/DC, Lionel Richie, and Tears for Fears.

Fun for all ages, this mix of theater, food, and music runs approximately one hour and 15 minutes.
